Moving On Up: Some Great Advice!

11 Sep

Hey young hollywood! Hope you’re all doing great out there today! I was searching the internet for some answers about moving up in hollywood for the job you want (I want to be a writer) and although all of you out there don’t necessarily want to be a writer, I found some advice that most likely pertains to all of you! What do you think of her advice?

What is your advice to aspiring writers’ assistants?

“No matter what job you have, make sure you do it well. When I was an intern at The Mark Gordon Company, our intern coordinator told me that every job was important, even something as menial as binding scripts. I really took that to heart, and anytime I would bind a script I would make sure it was the best bound script it could be. Sure enough, Mark Gordon himself came up to me and told me how he always loved getting the scripts I bound because they were so straight. Bottom line, people will remember you and be much more willing to help you get the job you want when you go the extra mile.
In addition, don’t be afraid to get creative. In the IPS writers’ room, I used to take pictures of the white boards so my writers could have .jpg images of that day’s work by the time they got home. They appreciated the extra effort, and I appreciated the break for my fingers.”
Interview with Joelle Garfinkel
What do you guys think of her advice? Do YOU have any advice?

Fall 2012 Internships in LA

14 Aug

What’s up young hollywood! I got a top secret list (well- not that top secret, more like IMDBPro secret) of some of the top production companies looking for Fall interns. This kind of internship is great if you’re seeking to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes of filmmaking-producing, development, etc. Interested? And these are legit internships. Some are even celebrity owned…Yeah I bet you’re interested now! Just kidding.

I thought I could make the work at least a little bit easier! SO I’ll show you the list and any requirements they companies might have for their interns (like a certain level of education or skills) and just take note that they’re pretty much all looking for interns now for the Fall. Top 5 Bag Essentials For An Intern

13 Aug

Hey Young Hollywood! Happy Monday! Now that i’ve been at my most recent internship for a while now, I’ve learned a thing or two about what absolutely needs to come to work with me! So today I thought I’d do a fun little post about the top 5 things every intern should carry in their bag! Feel free to add any essentials you carry in the comments!

This one is ab-so-lute-ly essential. Basically you can’t even work without this. An intern’s life is done on this computer. Whether it’s doing coverage, taking notes, looking up contact information, directions, everything!

This one goes hand in hand with the above. If your laptop dies, it’s no good. And you never know where you will be when it dies, so keep it handy!

This one is so simple it almost seems unnecessary. But trust me- it’s not. Sure, you may think that your office has plenty of paper and you wouldn’t need this. But when phones start ringing off the hook and you need to take a message and you go to reach for the paper thats usually on the desk- only to find that someone moved it- this notepad will be your savior!

Okay, so this one is more essential for me. But I happen to think it’s essential for pretty much anyone. There are a lot of positives to carrying this around. Like when you’re in the sun for a while running errands (hence the spf) or maybe you had a super long day and then you have to go pick up a client- it’s the perfect way to freshen up! (guys- you can replace this with chapstick!)

Lastly, we I put midol/advil/and advil migrane in here as an essential. Us interns are either running around all day or reading/staring at a screen all day, and you never know when that killer headache is going to hit you or cramps so bad you can’t stand it. So keep these on you always and you’re good to go!

By carrying these essentials in your bag, it shows you are always prepared and ready to go! Scatter brain interns don’t do very well, so carry these in your bag and you’ll ace every test! Do you have any other essentials you carry around? please share in the comments I’d love to hear what they are!

Work Week Style

12 Aug

So tomorrow young hollywood is going to be heading back to work, and even as an intern, it’s still important to present yourself in a nice, professional (and i’ll add fashionable, if you will) way. So today I thought i’d do a post on cute, but professional outfits for the FALL that us people from young hollywood can wear! (I’ll do another post in the winter as it gets rainy and cold) I think it’s always good to wear fun, playful things while we’re still young. Before you know it, we’ll all be stuck in corporate suits! (but I hope not) Feel free to share outfits you find in the comments!!

1.     First up, we have this lovely outfit put together by Elsie from abeautifulmess blog. The blazer is adorable paired with turquoise and any type of glasses would be cute! But take caution that if you do a lot of running around, either choose more suitable shoes or wear wedges like these and keep a pair of Toms or something in your bag!

Credit: abeautifulmess blog

2.     Next, we have another pants and top pairing from Sosie. Cuffed black pants are an essential thing we should all have in our closets. They’re a staple item that can go with so much! This top is perfect because even though it’s a tank top (the film industry is pretty laid back anyway, so I feel that we can get away with a tank top) but the critical thing here is that it’s covering up her cleavage so it’s still a professional look!

3.  This next work outfit for us people in young hollywood is a little more dressy compared to the outfits above, but I would say these classic dress pants and pumps are a must (again, the shoes depending on how much errand running you have to do) This outfit is from It focuses more on the pants, but it’s pretty easy to pair a nice top with!

4. Now for some hotter weather style. I know here in LA it has been incredibly hot and sometimes its hard to find work appropriate outfits that still keep me cool, but these next two outfits won my approval. This first one I found on pinterest. Again it’s important to be careful about the neckline and this one doesn’t seem too bad. A flowy dress like this will keep you cool and pair it with a cute belt and it’s easy to get ready! For more styles like this type in work style on Pinterest!

5. The last outfit I picked is another one that will keep you cool. I also found this one on Pinterest. I really love the colors! If you’re wearing a skirt or dress you should always make sure it is a long appropriate look (it doesnt have to be as long as this one) but somewhere around the knees at the shortest. This outfit really pops and it’s nice to see this color amongst all that grey and black that people wear to work!

Credit: Pinterest

So that’s it for now young hollywood! I’ll be doing more posts like this soon as the weather changes (or if I just feel like it). Like I said if you have other outfits you want to share post it in the comments! Would you wear any of these outfits to work?

Hey Young Hollywood!

Hope you are all having a fantastic weekend! I know here in LA its blazing hot-hitting the 100’s! So keep cool! I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m working on my weekend assignment as an intern- covering a book. If you don’t know what “covering” is it’s when you get a book, script, or any kind of written material and you read it, give a synopsis, and write comments about it for whether or not to recommend the material be made into a movie! (Not gonna lie I think it’s pretty cool even us interns get to recommend- or not- work to be made into a movie. I mean we could just discover the next Bourne series or something) I’ve had to do coverage for a while now and I’m for sure getting the hang of it- almost feel like a pro! But for those of you who are new to writing coverage I do have one tip in mind- always, always, always prood read and spell check your work! There is nothing more aggrivating for development, the producers, the assistant- whoever reads the coverage- to mentally spell check as they read! It’s a distraction and shows you don’t care that much- so let’s all stick together, spell check, and turn in the best damn coverage anyone has ever seen! Speaking of coverage- theres this great little website called- – “THE SCREENWRITING BLOG OF THE BLACK LIST” as it’s called , that gives you all you need to know about coveraeg, and anything else! Here’s the link to the coverage posts: It was great help when I was starting out (which wasn’t that long ago) and I wanted to pass it along to my fellow up and comers! What are your projects this weekend? Anything fun or interesting?

Note to Self: Try to get as much of the weekend assignements done on Friday so you have the rest of the weekend to relax!

Cheers to the rest of the weekend and goodluck to anyone else in young hollywood doing their weekend assignments!

P.S. This is amazing. Only procrastination will find you this
